I found this hardcover at a local Savers thrift shop. It looks to be a re-imagining of (or at least is loosely inspired by) Maturin's Melmoth the Wanderer, and indeed the book opens with an "in memoriam" to Maturin. But here, Melmoth is a woman, one of those who witnessed the empty tomb of the risen Christ, but who denied this and was cursed to wander eternally... It weaves excerpts from letters, journals, and other documents that recount sightings of Melmoth through history with main character Helen's modern-day experiences with tragedies and atrocities - and hope. But the conclusion was hard to read, with its rather nightmarish twist on the concept of divine love, where Melmoth herself addresses the reader to explain that she's seen every guilty secret, every bad decision - and says "who else would want you like this"...
