It's October 1918 and the war is drawing to a close. Toussaint Caillet returns home to his wife, Jeanne, and the young daughter he hasn't seen growing up. He is not coming back from the front line but from the department for facial injuries at Val-de-Grace military hospital, where he has spent the last two years. For Jeanne, who has struggled to endure his absence and the hardships of war, her husband's return marks the beginning of a new battle. With the promise of peace now in sight, the family must try to stitch together a new life from the tatters of what they had before.

This book is the first one I received as part of a wonderful sweepstake organised by dacejav which means I will receive 4 translated books from " Peirene Press" in a year.
I am bilingual myself so I always enjoy reading translations and I can honestly say this translation blew me away.
The language is absolutely beautiful and the prose a work of art.
The story about Jeanne, her daughter Leo and her husband Toussaint who returns disfigured from World War One is heartbreaking, moving and equally sad and full of love. A stunning piece of fiction
The cover by the way is just beautiful too.

As promised when I won the sweepstake I will offer this book now as a bookring.

I received the book today - thank you! I’ll start reading it once I’m done with my current read.

UPDATE: I never understood glorifying war. It's always a tragedy that most people who were touched by it are trying to forget. Jeanne is a young French mother who is trying to survive the first world war with her little daughter. When her husband comes back home with a disfigured face and a shattered soul, she is not sure what's going on with her beloved.
I liked the slow pace of the book, and the deep feelings of the characters, which sometimes were too hard to bear. One can imagine these could be stories of real people.

Just got the book from my mailbox and am really looking forward to reading it.

I just so happened to be in France for a weekend visit when I started reading the book. Very fitting!
To me, this was a super interesting book. The peace + war aspect is something that I'm engaged in anyway, but even outside of war situations, trauma and depression are subjects not talked about that often. I learned a lot from this. At the same time, I really enjoyed the writing style of the author.

Off to the next reader!

This is a beautifully told, very moving story. And the translation is exquisite. The effects of war are devastating and continue long after the guns fall silent. This book does a very good job of expressing that, thanks for sharing!

Wow…what on earth can I say about this book. Firstly this is not something I would normally have picked up to read so thank you for sharing Kinedi. I can’t honestly say I enjoyed it - it was too raw and incredibly sad - but the hopeful ending made it a book that will stay with me for some time and I’m glad I read it.

Will travel onward as soon as I have the next address

'Arrived safe and sound in our rural mailbox this morning. What a BX'ing week. A colouring book on Monday from mcsar, and this novel. This novel has travelled a long way! What shall I do when I am finished reading it?

Journal Entry 18 by wingBookgirrlwing at Acton, Ontario Canada on Monday, March 7, 2022
A sad book, but one that ends with hope. Beautifully written & translated. It takes you into the world of those "left behind" during a war, and you see the hardships that they endure as well as those fighting on the front lines. The details included about Toussaint's injuries and medical treatment(s) really added something. While they may be difficult to read, this was reality. We are at the end of the bookring....shall I add it to our Little Free Library?
