I got this softcover from Better World Books. It's a novel based on the exploits of Juan Moreira, a 19th-century Argentinian outlaw. It inspired a stage adaptation and several films, including this 1973 film.

The book includes an introduction explaining the context of the novel, and describing many of its stage adaptations - and explaining the ways in which it departs from the facts about the real-world Moreira.

The novel itself is rather lively, if a bit too focused on making Moreira out as a Hollywood hero - still quite readable, and with the same verve as many of the dime novels that popularized Old West characters from Billy the Kid to Wyatt Earp. And it's rather compelling in places, especially when dealing with Moreira's excellent horse and his loyal (*almost* to the end) comrades. If Moreira wasn't quite as much of a Robin Hood/hero as depicted, the story is still an entertaining one - and his end was as dramatic as any that a wanted man could have hoped for.
