This was the first 19th-century novel I've read in some years, and I confess it took me a while to get back into that Victorian 'why use one word when you could use seven?' style of writing. But it was worth it. After a slow start drawing all the characters at length, the did genuinely become engaging, and even funny. I say 'genuinely', because in truth, I didn't have particularly high hopes for the latter in a novel largely about Church of England politics!
From about halfway through I moved from mildly interested to totally hooked. Trollope's occasional interventions as an author narrator were great. I particularly liked the bit early on where he reassures the reader as to the eventual fate of Mrs Bold. The character of the 'Signora' was also a highlight, as she deftly worked her way through seducing half the males in the book. She had some serious skill in that department! This isn't a novel about high drama, it's a novel about gentle misunderstandings and missteps where we always know things will turn out right in the end. I'm glad I read it, and will add a few more Trollopes to my wishlist I think.
