I found this ex-library hardcover in this Little Free Library in Merrimack NH while dropping off some books of my own, and nabbed it for another release copy. I've enjoyed several books in this series now, including the first two, The Coroner's Lunch and Thirty-Three Teeth, and am picking up the rest as opportunity presents.

The series is about a 70-something doctor who finds himself appointed as the national coroner of Laos, and must do the best he can amid shortages of supplies - and lots of political pressure. Despite the often-harsh setting, the tone is very upbeat, with Siri's wit and humor shining through. And the supernatural touches add interest - and occasional confusion!

This book picks up after the events of The Merry Misogynist, with an opening that's truly chilling - and though it turns out to be a fictional account, it's clear that it could all too easily turn true if Siri doesn't watch his step.

The storylines include a series of murders of women, committed with fencing epees (!); suspicious behavior on the part of Phosy that's making his wife Dtui very unhappy; and Siri being sent on a diplomatic mission to Cambodia to see if he's "hero" material. The increasingly horrifying situation in Cambodia takes center stage, but of course Siri manages to solve the epee murders as well - but will he be able to help Phosy and Dtui mend their marriage?

I don't know how the author manages to mix so much humor with the often-bleak political situations, but he does; I love visiting with these characters, whose warm hearts, hidden talents, and senses of humor are all remarkable.
