Third Worlds: The politics of the Middle East and Africa by Heather DeeganMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Excellent overview of issues affecting state formation and economic growth in post-colonial Africa. Focuses especially on how Islam might help or hinder political development. Earlier parts of the book are more engaging; in the middle discussions of various economic organizations (both internal to and external of Africa) were more dry, with less critical reflection on how they succeed in their mission to enhance economic or political development.

Received in the Around the World Bookbox. When the pandemic hit, I was living in Sudan (for only 2 months - much shorter than I'd planned) so I'm very interested in some insights into that region. They have a hugely troublesome political and economic situation right now, and it's complicated and difficult to understand for someone like me who has not been aware of the region's history.
