I found this hardcover at a local Savers thrift shop. It's a look at the history of Salem, Massachusetts - focusing on the 19th century rather than the more infamous 17th-century witch-trial era. But while it looks into the economics and industries of the city, it also centers on a heinous murder: the grisly bludgeoning death of 82-year-old Captain Joseph White, in his own bed, in 1830. (I'd read about the crime before, in various true-crime/history books, but this is a more in-depth treatment of the causes, the crime itself, the investigation, and the aftermath.)
