I found this paperback at a local Savers thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy.

I loved this book when I first read it in the early '80s, largely because it deals with an amusement park devoted to providing real-life fantasy-roleplaying. One could *become* the character - dwarf, elf, space-ranger, sentient dinosaur - instead of just imagining it... The book's pretty funny in places, too, which helps. Among other jolly bits: the lyrics to the filkish version of "Gimme That Old-time Religion" are included, such as:

It was good enough for Isis:
she will help us in a crisis,
and she's never raised her prices,
So she's good enough for me!

I suspect the book won't be quite as entertaining to folks who have never been involved in F&SF fandom and/or fantasy roleplaying, but what the heck.

The concept of virtual reality has changed quite a lot since the book came out, with some real-world developments as well as extreme fictional versions; when the "Jurassic World" film came out, its vision of an expansive amusement park including actual re-engineered dinosaurs as well as stunning holographic versions made me crave to be able to visit such a place for real. (Though, one hopes, with better security {wry grin}.)

[There's a TV Tropes page on the novel, with some entertaining tidbits.
