The Dunwich Horror and Other Stories
2 journalers for this copy...
This handsome hardcover came from a boxed set that I got from my sister in New York, after she'd done some decluttering of her bookshelves. I've read these stories before and was glad of another release copy of Lovecraft's work.
This volume contains four stories:
"The Dunwich Horror," a classic from the "Cthulhu mythos", which has inspired screen adaptations (though they're not as effective as the written word). It deals with very strange goings-on in a remote New England village.
"The Whisperer in Darkness," which deals with what might be an alien invasion of an unexpected type.
"The Shadow Out of Time," in which technologically advanced alien beings switch consciousnesses with a human - who, unusually for a Lovecraft story, does survive the experience, though forever changed.
"The Haunter of the Dark," set in Lovecraft's home town Providence RI, and using real-world locations for its setting - though one hopes that any lightning-strikes or power-outages in that city don't have anything to do with eldritch horrors from beyond!
[There's a TV Tropes page on Lovecraft and his work, with some entertaining tidbits.]
The other books from the set:
The Randolph Carter Tales
Stories of the Dreamlands
At The Mountains of Madness and Other Stories
Macabre Stories
Call of Cthulhu and Other Stories
