I ordered this classic science fiction novel about censorship from Better World Books for a book club.

Journal Entry 2 by hobbit at Poughkeepsie, New York USA on Tuesday, October 12, 2021
I completed this classic book again for the second time in 30 or 40 years. It's got a lot of depth which I hadn't remembered and contains themes not just of censorship and book burning, but also the inanity and numbing effects of popular culture, the inequitable distribution of wealth, authoritarianism, and more.

My new book club selected and discussed it, and now I'm reserving it for a bookbox.

The Bookish book box is getting ready to travel again, which means that I have to journal all the ones that came back last year and determine if some have gone too many rounds and need to be pulled. This book made the cut and will go out in the new round.

I've read this one so I'm leaving it in the bookbox, but wanted to add my comments. It's a riveting and emotionally draining novel, well worth reading in its own right, even without considering it a standard-bearer against censorship.

While the classics don't seem to be going away any time soon, this book still raises the question of what we-who-love-books would do if the books *were* taken away. I found myself wondering whether I *could* memorize an entire book; I have snippets of lots of books memorized, amusing conversations between favorite characters etc., but nothing like the entire volumes. And which book would I most want to have by rote? Hmmmm....

Side note: I'd seen the 1966 film version back when it came out, but I don't recall being that impressed with it, FWIW.

[See the TV Tropes page here - having TV Tropes discuss this book is perhaps an ironic touch, what with the book being set in a world where people are urged to ditch books in favor of TV!]

I was getting ready to journal this book but realized I inadvertently forgot to journal this book upon arrival of the bookish bookbox. Sorry about that!

Like Hobbit, I, too am rereading this 30 years after I first read this in elementary school. Reading this as an adult really opened my eyes and made me see this book in a completely new light. I love the message of standing up for what you believe in. I can't fathom a world where books are illegal and owning one is a crime punishable by the burning of your home followed by your arrest. Bradbury's writing is just superb.
