Must be a perfect summer novel :)

The title says it all: it's a book from which men are absent. Not completely, they lurk in the background as unfaithful shadows, especially Boris, the main character's husband, who demanded a "pause from marriage" after 30 years to find out whether he is in love with a much younger woman from his department at university. The wife Mia Fredricksen, a poet, promptly loses her marbles and has to spend a short time in mental hospital. The book describes the time after her release, when she flees to her hometown and lives near her mother.

Since I never was married so long, I probably don't understand the situation. I cannot imagine to depend so completely from another person that I have a mental breakdown when he leaves. Mia's whole trauma struck me as outlandish and exaggerated. Stupid too: which husband would (after 30 years marriage!) NOT come back to his comforting wife, after he discovered that the young lover isn't quite the dream girl he expected? The question is rather: Will the wife take him back? So really, this heroine seems to be the opposite of me, I couldn't quite sympathise.

However I liked Abigail and her stitchings of hidden devils and masturbating women. Else there is a lot of poetry quotes, feminist theory and psychological discourses.
