Well, we certainly go far afield with this one.

Gamache has been struggling to keep the Surete du Quebec above water, amongst numerous cried of incompetence and corruption because the arrest numbers appear to show little activity. Is Gamache as corrupt as those he displaced, people wonder. His response is maddening as he gives no hint that he is in fact doing anything.

Meanwhile, back home in Three Pines, a mysterious dark figure has appeared in the village square. Nobody knows who it is or what it is there for, but some recognize it as an old Spanish "debt collector". Whose debt needs collecting?

The figure vanishes after a few days but then a body is discovered. Is there a connection?

Gamache sees the connection as he and his team embark on the most ambitious enterprise yet to stop the influx of drugs to the province. The effort takes the cooperation of many friends and even non-friends, and it may not succeed.

The plot is complex, to say the least, and in my mind pretty unrealistic. But fortunately to me it doesn't matter so much as long as the characters are interesting.
