Adding this book to a bookring boxbox.
I opened this book anticipating a great read. I'd heard so many good comments, and lately I've been reading a lot of book set in WWII, featuring women. But... I just wasn't impressed.
The book opens with too much back story, too much narrative, and I didn't have enough invested in one character before the storyline flips to another and time travels. Ordinarily this doesn't bother me. This time it did.
I simply didn't like Ines. I found this character annoying and shallow. Liv was okay, but her inability to ask a direct question and her proclivity to making assumptions made me want to shake her. It took too long in the story line to get around to explaining why Edith dragged her granddaughter to France, and her moods and tendency to be obtuse got old fast.
I enjoyed learning about France's Champagne region and the process of making this lovely wine, but...
I think there was a good story to tell here, but for me it didn't happen. When I compare The Winemaker's Wife to books like Lilac Girls or The Winter Garden, I find it lacking. Maybe it's just my mood. Everyone else has nothing but good things to say, so take my comments with a grain of salt.

Taking out of the Surprise Paperback bookring bookbox. I replaced it with A Wedding in December by Anita shreve.
The new formula for writing books is to move back and forth in time and not tell the story through. Also, the cover has the people facing backwards. I think it is time to change the formula. I did not like any of the characters and felt the story was whiny. I agree with Lynnwrites’ assessment of the book.

I loved this book. It's one that's going to say with me for awhile. This is the first book I read by this author, but it won't be the last.
