The novel consists of four interwoven narrative levels. After an accident and a long hospital stay, the writer Sidney Orr can hardly remember who he is. He suffers from poor concentration, has to learn everything anew, including his craft.
John Trause (an anagram of Auster) of the second story is also an author. But after the death of his second wife seven years ago, he was no longer able to publish any of his works.
In the third part, Orr overcomes his writer's block thanks to a dark blue notebook that he discovers at a Chinese stationery dealer. Suddenly, the ideas fly to him.
The fourth level is the story Orr begins to write: the publishing editor Nick Bowen leaves his wife and work. He only takes the manuscript for a novel by a deceased writer with the title Night of the Oracle. Destitute, he settles in a bunker.
A strange book about writing, chance and fate which might leave you slightly claustrophobic.
