“Mesmerizing. . . . This is what fantasy is for.” ―New York Times Book Review
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life―a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.
Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy, which is followed by book two, Siege and Storm, and book three, Ruin and Rising. This title has Common Core connections, and this deluxe paperback edition includes an interiew with author Leigh Bardugo, a lost letter from Mal, discussion questions, and more.

I am a huge fan of the Six of Crows duology, and the new Netflix show based on both series, but I haven't read this book yet! So excited to get started on this!
Update 10th September 2021: I really enjoyed this book, but I have to say, this is one book where the TV show is better. I don't hold it against the book though, it was still very good, it's just that the TV series was so much richer in detail. It's interesting to see how it was adapted to the show and incorporating Six of Crows as well. I'm curious to read the next books and excited for the next season of the show!

Bringing with me to the September BC meetup!
We had an outdoor meetup at my daughter's yard. A little chilly, but the rain held off for us. This was one of the books I brought home.
Enjoyed this book. The characters are interesting, even though some of the underlying story is depressing. Starting book #2 now.
I was at a meetup at Cravings and passed this along to another reader.
