I read another copy of this book in 2006. This is what I wrote aafter I read it...

Gogol Ganguli (who later changed his name to Nikhil) is the sone of a Bengali couple who move to Massachusetts. Gogol studies architecture and attempts to escape from his parents’ Bengali culture by completely immersing himself in American values. In the end, he marries the daughter of another Bengali couple, but this marriage does not work out as his wife slowly slips into an affair with a man named Dimitri.

This is a very heart-warming family portrait of a Bengali customs. It shows the difficulty Ashima (Gogol’s mother) has as she adopts to life in the United States, but that despite her cultural difference, she eventually adapts to American life. In the end, we see that Gogol also slowly begins to recognize his ancestral culture when he finds Moushumi attracting him enough to want to marry her.
