I picked this up because I recently read and loved The Possible World by this author. Near Canaan is the author's debut, written and published while she was in medical school -- an impressive feat! While stylistically similar to The Possible World, I found it far less propulsive and cohesive. The disparate parts never really came together into a satisfying whole for me. This might have been partially due to the fact that there were so many different POV characters, which may have diluted the narrative a bit too much. Still worth reading, however!
