Hetty "Handful" Grimke is an urban slave in nineteenth-century Charleston, North Carolina. Sarah Grimke is the idealistic daughter of Hetty's slave owner. The author was inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, an abolitionist and suffragette. The novel begins on Sarah's eleventh birthday when she is given ownership of the ten-year-old Hetty or "Handful". The novel follows the lives of these two females for the next thirty-five years.

An historical fiction based on the life of Sarah Grimke, an abolisionist and suffragette from Charleston, South Carolina in the early 1800's. The story is told in alternating chapters between Sarah and Handful, a slave on Sarah's family's estate. The story tells of the horrors and injustices that the slaves endured. It also tells of the struggles of being a woman in that time in history.
