My previous review still stands! Machado is one-of-a-kind:
"What a beautiful, perfect collection of a nightmare. Avid readers know books can save lives, and I daresay this one will save many. I've never encountered anything quite like this book.
(The author is also the narrator for the audio version, with a spoken-word vibe)
Some chapters that resonated with me:
•Dream House as Folktale Taxonomy
•Dream House as Idiom
•Dream House as Choose Your Own Adventure®
•Dream House as Schrödinger's Cat
It's still early days, but this could be the book that defines my 40s."

Interesting. Some beautifully written passages, perhaps too detailed at times for me.
I am assuming this is typical of abuse the world over, no matter the protagonists. It’s the insidious nature of the abuse, hidden from others, hardly discernible and intangible that makes it impossible to overcome. This characteristic is well portrayed.
On the side I loved the ‘ stick of gum’ Hallowe’en story in the notes.

A really powerful book (and it wasn't until part way through that I spotted it was a memoir) about a young woman who embarks on a romantic relationship which turns abusive. The relationship is between two women, and there are some very interesting points made about how people always assume that an abusive relationship is man abusing woman, and how lesbian women sometimes assume that because no man is involved their relationship will be perfect. The other bit that really tore my heart is when the author is at a party and is told by someone that they believe her. Because there is no proof (and indeed in this case no law-breaking) the Dream House woman remains in her social circle with the abuse remaining hidden or disbelieved. Unfortunately I found the very stylised short chapters a bit annoying, but I'm still really glad I read this.

Just received, this went fast! Thank you, Poodlesister for the cute Royal Mail postcard and all the BC bookplates :-)

Sorry, did not like this at all. I was confused a lot of the times and some chapters I did not get at all. The footnotes were so distracting and the general tone too passive, like a narration of a spectator of her own life.
Thanks for sharing all the same.

Received today, thanks estelle1806. And thank you for the stickers!

'Enjoy' isn't really the right word for this book. It's a tough story, and it's important for these stories to be told. All too often these experiences are downplayed or even flat-out denied. I thought the way the book was set up, with various short chapters with literary tropes and what look like general observations often setting the reader up for her matching experience in the next chapter, was interesting, although it did make it feeling slightly detached at times - but that may well be a way of being able to write about it.
I liked the unexpected kindness of die-hard Republican Uncle Nick: 'Everyone's heart breaks in the same way.' Not entirely true of course, but a kind thing to say. Thanks for sharing!

got it. thx
update:
This was ... different. The mixture of different text types and formats kept me on my toes. I thought the metatext worked well and the voice of the narrator is unique and elicits sympathy. A real life experience shines through a literary narration broken up and supported by academic musings. For me, this was not distracting, but enriching.
I greatly enjoyed this novel albeit the sensitive topic. Thank you for sharing it!

on to the next reader

I was able to finish the book finally. This book was slow and hard to read, not really my interest. At first (most of the book) I wasn't sure at all who was you, who was she and who was I.

I will send the book to next reader.

Received today after the storm Céline.

Reading this book was like eating delicious slices of a cake. The prose is so exquisite.
That said I don’t see anything different from any relationship turned abusive.
There are terrible women all over the history and today I don’t think that working under a female head of staff is idyllic.
I probable missed the point…Same with the footnotes.
Thank you echode for this contribution.

In the mail across the Atlantic against the wild winds.

This book is now with me.

This was an excellent but disturbing, haunting and eye-opening read. It was very tough to read but mesmerizing at the same time. It made me think hard about my preconceptions about domestic abuse.
Thank you, echode, for offering this book to the roundabout!

This book is on its way to Valpete now.

I found this book to be very disturbing, to say the very least. It did open my eyes to domestic abuse in lesbian relationships, which I knew little about. It was truly heartbreaking on many levels.
