I enjoyed this book. It reminded me sadly of some of the ways my fellow Christians can either knowingly or unknowingly distort Christianity to make it suit their own ends or those of others, often in ways which disadvantage other people who are not like them. Homosexuality isn't the only area, slavery was also justified using the bible and the idea that black people were of a lower race or intellect than white people, was quoted quite widely, despite its lack of biblical substance.
I particularly enjoyed the first bit of the book, however the last two chapters didn't feel right to me, hence my low score. I also failed to understand at all about how the story of the lady in the wood fitted into it at all. I also struggle with the idea that her mother would just suddenly change (and in more ways than one) and cease being abusive, let her move back in and carry on as if nothing has happened. To be clear, some parents do make changes like this, however the Christians I have met who hold the extreme views generally do not.
Great first novel though.
