On to Mt TBR it goes.

From the beginning it is obvious that Elizabeth Gilbert has put a lot of time and research into the novel. Although well written there was simply too much detail, about too many subjects, which made it incredibly drawn out and tedious. I have to fess up I did quite a bit of skimming at times, perhaps a more patient reader will get more out of it...

Sent as a random act of bookcrossing kindness because it was on your wishlist. Enjoy!

Wow, another Wishlist book in the parcel I received today! I hope I enjoy it more than marmee463, this was added to my wishlist after reading very positive reviews on the Facebook ABC Book Club group, even though I hated Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray, Love”.

I very much enjoyed this book.
Set in the 1800s and centred mostly on the life of Alma, an only child who was obsessed with nature and who became an expert on mosses.
The story was very personal, at times exceptionally intimate, but at all times it was very interesting and almost read like a memoir.
A very well researched book and so much better than Eat, Pray, Love.

Caught at Meetup, on TBR pile

I did not have high expectations of this book as I did not enjoy Eat, Pray, Love by this author. It was a very long novel, maybe a bit too long. It was quite interesting with the references to botany and early uses of plants for medicinal uses. Alma Whittaker was an interesting character, and not always likeable. She was an unusual woman, very intelligent, and not afraid to tackle difficult subjects. She lived most of her life on her family’s estate in Philadelphia and then in her early fifties travelled to Tahiti and lived there and then travelled to Holland and lived there until her death with her mother’s family.
