It's a remake of Cervantes' medieval story in a burlesque, satirical way. Greene's Quixote is a Monsignor from a small parish near Valencia, his Sancho is the Communist former mayor of El Toboso. One day the two friends embark onto a holiday tour through post-Franco Spain in Quixote's old Seat 600 ( called Rocinante) and have all kind of funny or tragic adventures and encounters in holy and not so holy places. It wouldn't be a Greene story if it wouldn't contain heavy discussions about truth and moral, Communism and faith, but the general mood is breezy and ironic. This must be one of his most effortless and cheerful novels.
