From the publisher:
On a summer's day in 1596, a young girl in Stratford-upon-Avon takes to her bed with a sudden fever. Her twin brother, Hamnet, searches everywhere for help. Why is nobody at home?
Their mother, Agnes, is over a mile away, in the garden where she grows medicinal herbs. Their father is working in London.
Hamnet is a novel inspired by the son of a famous playwright: a boy whose life has been all but forgotten, but whose name was given to one of the most celebrated plays ever written.

This was a good read - it's very well written and drew me right in, sometimes it was hard to put down. The Title Hamnet is a bit misleading, because the novel's main protagonist is Hamnet's mother Agnes, an enigmatic character. At first I was irritated: Shakespeare's wife was Anne Hathaway - but then I read on Wikipedia that her father called her Agnes in his will. O'Farrell draws a fascinating picture or her, of how she might have been - and of what life was like in the late 16th century in Elizabethan England, village life, the threat of the plague. Interesting - in a creepy way - was also the description of the journey of a certain flea that carried the plague bacteria.
Very recommendable!

Received it from a friend last September at the Silent Book Club :)

What a wonderful book! Agnes is such a brilliant character, and as the story moves forward over years and decades, I was deeply interested in how the relationships of all the female characters (children, young and adult women) – with themselves and each other – developed. I also loved reading in the Author's Note and Acknowledgments about the research process conducted by Maggie O'Farrell while working on the book, and took note of some intriguing titles she read to learn more about herbal science and Tudor times.
Thank you Cassiopaeia and ApoloniaX for the great read!

Picked up from the book buffet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which so transported me back to the 16th century that I could almost smell it. The book is more about Shakespeare's wife Agnes (Anne), but Hamnet's presence is felt everywhere.

Sent to daffodil-2 as part of the Reading it, Want It game.
Enjoy!
