I got this softcover at Barnes and Noble, to have a release copy; I've been enjoying the story via audiobook. (One of its co-authors, Adam Silvera, wrote They Both Die at the End, one of my favorite reads of the year.) It's about a Southern boy who's in New York City for the summer, interning at the legal firm where his mother works and fretting about missing his friends back home. He spots a handsome young man carrying a cardboard box into the post office, and is so smitten that he follows the youth inside, where they strike up a conversation while waiting in line - a classic "meet cute" that impresses both, though as the second boy has only just broken up with his previous boyfriend (the box contains personal items he meant to mail back), this may not be the perfect time for a new romance. But they're each interested enough to take some steps to try and find each other again, and once they do, a delicate and often goofy courtship begins...
Later: I enjoyed this one, though it's so clearly a teen story - where massive changes take place every few weeks, and a semester's worth of relationship is a lifetime to the characters - that it's kind of hard for me to empathize with from my "years fly by in the blink of an eye" viewpoint {wry grin}.
The story also has the requisite elements of tight friendship groups who apparently hang out together to the complete exclusion of any other friendships (with catastrophic results when anyone is on the outs with somebody else in the pod), and a heavy reliance on social media that's sometimes helpful, sometimes stalkerish, and sometimes really intrusive (from my viewpoint anyway). Oh, and I did get miffed at the overused plot point where a misunderstanding triggers a heart-wrenching breakup; granted, that can happen in real life, and was certainly telegraphed far in advance in this story, AND was cleared up relatively quickly, but still. it'd be nice to have a teen love story that did NOT include that particular trope.
But in general it's been fun, and there have been some bits of dialogue that made me laugh out loud. (Or gasp out loud; the bit about the "Hamilton" tickets was pretty intense!) And the kids are sometimes mature beyond their years regarding expectations for long-distance relationships or when deciding that they don't want to lose friendships just because dating didn't work out. Not sure how believable *that* is, but it'd be nice to think it's something teens might actually do.
Looks as though there's a sequel, which I may pick up just to see what the future has in store for our heroes!
