This book depicts a real crime which happened 1959 in Kansas, and of course it's an agonizing read. Capote had tons of research notes and meticulously describes how it came to this bloody robbery. The two culprits Hickock and Smith left the crime scene with a portable radio, a pair of binoculars, and less than $50 in cash; for this ridiculous loot four people had to die.
Ive read this long ago, but I remember that I didn't feel well within this grisly tale. Capote spoke over years at lenght with the murderers, even befriendet one of them. His aim was to question the death penalty, and he went to great efforts to vet the background of these convicts, screen their motives, their conscience, make them human.
This was all lost on me, I could find not a bit of sympathy or patience for the heinous killers. Capote somehow got too carried away with this case, methinks.
