"The Kobayashi Maru" was first published in 1989, and in based on the original Star Trek tv show. It was Julia Ecklar's first book, and went on to write many more Star Trek books - both under her own name, and as L. A. Graf. (These books were a team effort - Karen Rose Cercone and, in one case, Melissa Crandall also contributed). She has also recorded a number of albums.

The book is set shortly after Star Trek : the Motion Picture. When the Federation lost contact with the Venkatsen Research Group, a group of scientists staioned on Hohweyn VII, the Enterprise was sent to investigation. Due to tricky conditions in that region of space, the final leg of the journey was being made by shuttle craft - with Kirk, McCoy, Sulu, Chekov and Scotty on board. Naturally, things don't go smoothly - the shuttle is damaged by a gravitic mine amd both Sulu and Kirk are badly injured. Events bring the Kobayashi Maru to mind - a command scenario at the Academy, designed to test a cadet's character. It's well known as a no-win scenario - no matter what the cadet does, there will always be too many Klingons. (The first cadet to win...cheated). Kirk, Scotty, Sulu and Chekov all took the test at the Academy and, largely to pass the time, they each tell their story of how they dealt with it.

A simple, straightforward and easily read book. It's obviously written for fans of the show so, if you've enjoyed one, you'll probably enjoy the other.
