Margaret Laurence (1926-1987) is one of Canada's best loved authors. I worked for a couple of years with her daughter Jocelyn Laurence, also a writer/editor. This book is the first published literature by Margaret Laurence and I just loved the stories. They were so vivid and full of meaning. There were really well developed personalities and although it is a work of fiction, you can easily forget the people and events are from Laurence's imagination (while based on her experiences living in Africa). I am not completely informed on the state of affairs today in Ghana - formerly the Gold Coast - but back when these stories were written, the country was going through very big changes. (Independence) At least two of Margaret Laurence's novels have been made into movies: "A Jest of God" (the movie is called "Rachel Rachel". It starred Joanne Woodward and was directed by her husband Paul Newman) and "The Stone Angel" with Ellen Burstyn. I hope you will enjoy this book and it will lead you to other works by Margaret Laurence. This book is part of the NSS event for the Bookcrossing Virtual Convention, which was held April 16-18th, 2021. Thanks, MissMarkey for organising it!
