I found this hardcover in this Little Free Library in Devens MA while dropping off some books of my own. It's a collection of love letters contributed to the editor and posted with permission of the authors, and ranging from scrawls on napkins to elaborate emails, from a vintage telegram to colorful collages. While some of the notes are about breakups, the majority are upbeat, from first-date invitations to wedding-anniversary declarations. The letters appear as facsimiles of their original format, showing typewritten pages, screen-shots of texts, printouts of emails, photos of tattered legal-pad pages, and so forth - some easier to read than others, especially the hand-written ones, but all quite interesting. (There's a multi-page handwritten letter from 1918, from a young woman to the man who - apparently to her great surprise - has indicated his romantic interest; the level-headed tone of that one seems almost cold compared to today's blurtings-out on social media, but it seems to have worked!)

I appreciated the additional material at the end, where the editor includes comments from some of the contributors as to how it felt to dig back through their memorabilia and seeing some of the letters for the first time in years. And there's a section of follow-up as well, highlighting specific letters and explaining how the people met and what became of them afterwards, from the 1918 courtship mentioned above to a jokey Post-it note in which the writer scribbled "I love you Gary" - and crossed out "Gary", replacing it with "Larry". Apparently Gary/Larry liked her sense of humor! Some of the follow-ups are very poignant, dealing with sudden injury or death that interrupted a romance. And at least one had a surprise twist: the act of re-reading the old letters reawakened interest, the person reached out to the letter-writer, and they reconnected!
