Apparently I have forgotten to make a journal entry after reading the book, even though I was impressed by it. Halfway through, I thought it would be a good candidate for the favourite roundabout. I felt the same after finishing the book.
I loved it and I am sharing it for the roundabout.

Although this book hits on important themes of cancer and sibling rivalry, I found both characters to be insufferable. Perhaps it's an age thing, since I couldn't relate to most of the dialogue. I will be sending this along shortly.

Just couldn't get into this one. Maybe it's because the setting is just so far away from my live, that I couldn't relate, or maybe it was the writing style, which I found confusing in places. But ended up a bit bored by the whole thing, so had to put it to once side. Not one for me :(

I understand what the author is trying to achieve with this book. She wants to give hope for those who are on similar dark paths. However, for those of us who are on other dark paths of illness, reading about other people's illnesses is the last thing I want to be reading about. Hence, I will not be picking up another book by this author, for fear of what kind of dark paths she will lure me into next.

Let’s start with the difficulties :- I am getting on a bit, not American nor Korean, so I struggled with much of the language including idioms, trade names, Asian foodstuffs and yoof speak. But then, the analysis of ex-pat alienation and ya insecurities and coping with social media “keeping up with the Jones’” was enlightening and fascinating. Quite a rollercoaster but I think I enjoyed it. Definitely a good choice for sharing with us all. Once again, thank you.

I didn’t like the writing to start with and then I realised it was more about the language and wondered if it was a translation problem but when I checked the author and found they wrote for the New York Times and had lived in Hong Kong since before her first birthday before moving to the US, I decided the translation wasn’t the problem. Maybe it was cultural, but after looking up so many words in the Urban Dictionary, I realised it because I’m old (like Valpete) and this story is about young New Yorkers. Almost everyone was unbearable especially the sisters. The only think I could relate to was "Sisters never have a chance to be friends. We are pitted against each other from the moment we're born". I wasn’t really enjoying it so started skimming it towards the end because I was getting chased to move it on, but I paid more attention to the ending and was really disappointed.

Two young sisters have both moved to New York - one rich and successful, the other flunking her college class and living in a slum with a really horrible man. They avoid each other, until June suddenly shows up looking for Jayne, and it seems that June's perfect life is not quite as good as it seems. I have to say that I'm not at all au fait with New York youth slang and I had to do a bit of googling along the way, but I really enjoyed this feel-good story of Jayne finding hope as she helps her sister. One thing that June seems not to have thought through - I'm pretty sure having had cancer will push up your life/health insurance premiums colossally for the rest of your life.

Apparently I forgot to journal this when I received the book. Sorry!
I just finished it, though at some point I wasn't sure I actually wanted to finish it. In the end, it was ok, but the first third was a chore to get through. I think what bothered me most was the language. Not so much for references to Korean food and clothing items, but rather the swearing. It seemed rather overdone to me.
The part I did like was seeing how these two Korean sisters were trying to get along in both cultures. Fitting in when you come from a different culture always is hard. There was so much that I initially didn't understand because there seemed so much secrecy in this family's relationships. I found that part of the story very sad.

This book was initially very hard for me to get into, I had to make myself read it. As others have said, the language and idioms were unfamiliar and sometimes just coarse, and the sisters' lives hard to relate to. But I warmed up a bit the further I read and got more interested in the sisters' mutual relationship, their family secrets and their struggles as Korean Americans in finding their own fit in life.
Sorry for keeping the book for so long, but now I have finished it and it is ready to travel on.

I struggled at bit in the beginning and felt like it was going to be a bit of a chore to get through this book. But later on I enjoyed it more, even though I still found it hard to warm to the characters. The issues it deals with are tough, and it felt a bit much all at once. But then I guess if all these issues affect you, they don't present themselves one at a time for your convenience. The end, while uplifting, felt a little predictable and rushed. But all in all I thought it gave interesting insights and I think it was a good choice for the roundabout. Thanks for sharing!

There seem to be very mixed reviews for this book, but I definitely fall into the "loved it" camp. As a Canadian-born child of Chinese immigrants, I could relate to the narrator's feelings about straddling the line between two cultures, and I enjoyed all the food references. Like several of the other readers, I too am among an older generation, but I have two daughters about the same age as Jayne and June, so I've heard enough of the lingo (and had it explained to me) that it wasn't unfamiliar. Overall, I really enjoyed the humour and the exploration of the themes of illness and sibling relationships.
Thanks to mcsar for contributing this book to the roundabout, and to estelle1806 for sharing it initially!

An interesting mix of emotions about this book. I found the destructive behaviours disturbing but the stories around fitting in and finding your place quiet compelling. I found the ending rather abrupt - not sure what I had expected but it seemed predictble.
