This is probably more a biography than a novel, it tells the story of the life of a man born in China and afflicted with a severe stutter. He was unable to read and did not possess an identity card, he endured a brutal childhood. It tells of his struggle to to move beyond the limitations of his childhood and his striving to be accepted as a man in a modern society that has little patience. Beautifully written.
