I learned about the Moso tribe in southwest China from a documentary film. The tribe is unique in their matrilineal society. Families live in houses where only females have their own bedrooms, the "flower rooms", where they can let in the men they like to spend the night. There is no marriage and the relationship only lasts as long as mutually agreeable. It's not a promiscuous society, just like for most people, living alone doesn't mean you will bring someone home every night. As the coauthor Christine Mathieu points out, there are quite a few advantages to this arrangement. For one, it empowers the women and makes domestic abuse, which plagues many societies, unlikely. It also frees the males the pressure of producing a heir and providing for the family.

I enjoy reading this book for the interesting insight into a little known society, but I do not like Yang as a person. I hope it's just immaturity, but she can be rather mean and selfish.

Saving this for the indigenous bookbox.
