I got this softcover manga at Barnes and Noble, after enjoying Volume One. The series mixes humor with science - indeed, there are segments from "the encyclopedia of real animals" which include photos of the creatures "developed" in the stories. The design team consists of characters with quirks of their own - the guy who designed the horse and now tries to give every new creature a horse-esque style (sometimes this works: seahorses, for example; more often it does not, for reasons which the engineer who builds the prototypes is happy to point out); the tiny girl who loves cute things (but for whom "cute" means "poisonous and/or cannibalistic"); the big bearded guy who really does go for things that most of us would see as cute and cuddly - and more.

Later: this one picks up with the design team visiting Hell for a celebratory banquet - to which God is about to arrive; but alas, he's been distracted by other things, and sends his mount Garuda instead. With a new commission: "a creature suitable for a theme park in hell"! They head back to the office and try to come up with something fabulous, with the discussion ranging from a T-rex to a lyrebird.

Later chapters include a rap battle (!) between two of the designers - neither of whom are very good at that; the design of a turtle and several owls, and a design-battle between Jupiter and Neptune for "a bird that lives on an island of ice". Yep, a penguin-design contest! Farther on we meet a hive of identical beings, which at first seemed like an insect colony of some kind but turned out to be that most colony-minded of mammals, the naked mole rat...

This volume ends with a look at jellyfish - and the concept of immortality, leading to quite the cliffhanger!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits. And the anime adaptation is quite charming!]
