I enjoyed Veitch's Tombstone Hand and wanted to try more from his "Panel Vision" series. Got this softcover from an online seller.
This one has the same one-panel-per-page format, but departs from the formula by adding a single word as a caption to each page: "Condition. Isolation. Distraction." etc.
The images show a man unlocking his door, getting food from the fridge, watching TV, going to bed... basic slice-of-life stuff, though the words on each page suggest weariness and boredom.
Ah, but then he starts to dream, from finding himself standing in a war-torn village wearing only a jock strap and carrying a basketball (!). The dream shifts from violent (with an appalling scene of mass casualties) to a tranquil one, where our hero finds himself on a sandy island beach.
Skin-diving, undersea artifacts, an octopus attack, a snazzy resort - and a "Gulliver"-style sequence where he sees himself as an ape scaling a gigantic version of his human form... and that's not all!
Eventually our hero sees a shrink about the dreams, and is prescribed an inhibitor that should let him get dreamless sleep. Will he choose to use it, or return joyfully to the surreal world of his dreams?
Not my favorite of Veitch's works so far, but it has its moments.
