Brilliant historical novel set in the early 1600s, during the reign of King James 6th of England. In the lead-up to the Gunpowder plot of 1605, Francis Gorges is brought to the Royal Palace as lady to Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King James. She is later charged with being a witch but, after a time in the Tower of London, is released without charge. Then she meets Tom Wintour, a lawyer...... who later discloses his part in the Powder Plot against King James and his eldest son Henry. The final part of the book tells of the intrigue leading up to and following the failed plot. Fabulous book!
