I got this lovely hardcover at Toadstool Books in Nashua. Sarah Jacoby's illustrations enhance the poetic tale of various birds and animals as they make their way to their various homes - sometimes via hard and dangerous journeys, whether long-distance flights or quick dashes to elude predators. And the book includes the viewpoints of the hunters as well as the hunted; for the wolves, "...hunger is a burning thing that settles like a stone. This road is hard, this road is long, this road that leads us home." The fleeing rabbits note that "the air is cold and sharp as ice. It chills our trembling throats", as they dive into the briars where the wolves cannot follow.

The final panels show the panorama of the woodlands, with the birds, mice, rabbits, and wolves all enjoying their place in the world. It's quite lovely - and if it doesn't choose to reveal what the wolves DID catch for dinner, it certainly expresses the teetering balance of nature.
