I treated myself to this. It has been on my wishlist for ages
A mysterious gathering of thirteen people is interrupted by local magistrate, Roger Nowell.
Is this a witches' Sabbat?
Two notorious Lancashire witches are already in Lancaster Castle waiting trial. Why is the beautiful and wealthy Alice Nutter defending them? And why is she among the group of thirteen on Pendle Hill?
Elsewhere, a starved, abused child lurks. And a Jesuit priest and former Gunpowder plotter, recently returned from France, is widely rumoured to be heading for Lancashire. But who will offer him sanctuary? And how quickly can he be caught?

A mix of history and fiction and a good mix it is. I have walked on Pendle Hill and the surrounding area so I really enjoyed this. There's quite graphic detail of the sex and the torture. Not for the squeamish.
On its way to Plum-crazy

The North is the dark place
The opening chapter gives you the first taste of the atmosphere of the bleak, mysterious Pendle, an air which continues throughout. It's beautifully written, & yet quite simply , so with no unnecessary description or flannelling, the stark, bleak world of 17th century Lancashire really comes to life. There are some rather gruesome & grisly parts, made more so by the matter of fact way in which they are related.
It's an unsettling & creepy read (even when read sat out in the sun one afternoon!)
& of the few books about the Pendle witches or witch trials in general, I've read, I think it's the one that has impressed me the most.
Thanks for sharing dolph1n, I'll reserve it until I find it a reader who I'll know will appreciate it.

Thank you so much for this book - think I’ll definitely enjoy it
This was an easy and quick read. I enjoy reading about witch trials and Pendle in particular and this was a good read!
On a side note, the cabin where we holidayed last year overlooked Pendle Hill.
Thanks for sharing Dolph1n and Plum-Crazy.

Unlike all of the previous readers, I didn't really enjoy this one. I usually really love Jeanette Winterson's writing, but this one just didn't do it for me and I didn't finish it. Oh well, you can't win them all.
