One mark of a clever book is whether it had me scurrying to reread certain chapters after reaching the end. Transcription managed that no problem. Like quite a few of Kate Atkinson's books, it's an innovative and literary novel disguised (welcomingly) as something much more down to earth and accessible. Judith, the central character, captured me immediately. She's so frank, well-intentioned, and yet unexpectedly devious right from the start. I loved reading her unspoken thoughts throughout the whole plot. They gave it all a liveliness that would otherwise have been lacking.

The subject matter was interesting as well. History books about WWII naturally focus on events and operations that really made a difference to how the war turned out, but it was fun to learn about the types of things that were simultaneously going on that turned out *not* to be significant, such as MI5's work following potential Nazi sympathisers within the UK. Dealing with historical cul-de-sacs like this gives the novelist a good amount of freedom to explore what might have beens, and Atkinson uses this freedom to excellent effect in her portrayal of the Dolphin Street operation and all the characters involved in it. (I'm still intrigued about Godfrey Toby even now. I wish she'd write another novel with him in!)

Transcription isn't going to supplant Life After Life as my favourite Atkinson novel (how do you top that one???), but I really enjoyed it all the same.
