Well if I'm going to lose my Rebus virginity, the Falkirk convention was a good place to do it :-) I've walked up or down Fleshmarket Close many, many times so have been intrigued to read this particular novel for a long time.

So, I've finally read a Rebus novel! It was an alright read. I wouldn't object to reading more, but don't think I'll particularly seek them out.

The subject matter of Fleshmarket Close was interesting given the current political climate: lots and lots about refugees and the animosity they experience. It's a bit depressing how little the debate has moved on in the 19 years since this novel was first published.

Less important, but still noteworthy in terms of things that haven't moved on, I noted a passage where Rebus comments on construction work at the old Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (the Quartermile). All this time later and that construction work hasn't even finished yet!!!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Merry Christmas to my International Secret Santa partner.

This novel is set in Edinburgh where I live. Fleshmarket Close is a real street in the city centre - best known usually for the fact that it's on an almost 45-degree angle and has steps running up most of it. Originally it was the street where Edinburgh's butchers mostly lived and worked (hence the name). I believe the steep incline leading down towards the Nor' Loch below was considered convenient by the butchers for drainage reasons!

Thank you for sending this novel in my INTL Secret Santa parcel!
I have been to Edinburgh twice, and I consider it one of my favourite cities in the world, special and different... I hope I will return some day! :)
