This is one of my all time favorite books. I highly recommend the two follow-on books as well. I was lucky enough to meet Justin Cronin at a book signing a few years ago for the release of the last book in this trilogy. He spoke for a while and talked about the development of this overall story line. Such a nice man, too. I found these books to be so engaging. I loved (most) of the characters, ao it was easy to care about what happened to them. It took about a year after reading them, though, before I could go out in the backyard after dark :)
