FROM BOOKLIST:
"The evacuation of British forces from Dunkirk in June 1940 left Hitler free to consolidate his domination over 'Fortress Europe.' From the highest levels of the British government, demands were made to 'do something' to contest Nazi control of the Continent. Thus the Special Operations Executive (SOE) was born, given the task of recruiting agents to infiltrate occupied territory and, in conjunction with local resistance groups, carry out acts of sabotage, assassination, and the waging of low-intensity partisan warfare. Many of these agents were young and inexperienced, and they primarily brought their dedication and courage to their task. Stafford is a former diplomat who has written extensively on wartime intelligence operations. Utilizing the reminiscences of now-elderly operators, he tells an engrossing, taut narrative that often reads like a well-done espionage novel. Stafford captures the almost crushing tension, constant sense of danger, and occasional moments of exhilaration that were the companions of these brave men and women."
