The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman - Good

Decided it was time to see what all the hype was about.

I think I would categorise it as a cross between: The Golden Girls, Waiting For God, Midsommer Murders and a geriatric version of The Famous Five (well there's only four, but you know what I mean).

Very readable. Flew through it in just a couple of days. If you like Richard Osman and cosy crime, you'll love it. You can hear his voice in all the quips (I think he must have been on a target for quips per page).

Our characters all live in a retirement village. Very upmarket. There are all sorts of activities and clubs, but our four meet every Thursday to look over old, unsolved, murders that one of their previous members had kept after retiring from the police. Imagine their excitement when there is an actual, real, murder of one of the businessmen associated with the complex. And so to action.

Of course, there are a couple of likeable Detectives who find themselve outmaneouvered and outsmarted by our intrepid group. I especially liked when the lead Detective thought he was there to interview them and they ran rings round him.

There are all sorts of adventures and mysteries and twists and a few more murders before we reach the conclusion. As I said before, lots of wry humour and quips and I did chuckle occasionally (I'm not a laugh out loud person ordinarily). Enjoyable in a non-challenging way.

All in all, it's like being wrapped in a blanket with a cup of cocoa. I expect to see an adaptation slipping into the Midsommer Murders slot on TV any day now.... and I'll probably read the next one when Mr Osman gets round to it.
