In Lagos, Nigeria, three people come together on a beach where aliens have landed in the ocean.

Received with thanks as part of the Book Buffet for the 2021 Unconvention. It also included a nice bookmark and some great Ballycumber stickers which look as though they might have been handmade.
What an interesting book. My opinion of it changed back and forth as I went through - confusing, ridiculous, insightful, imaginative, absurd, implausible, speculative, and more - all of these applied. Overall, I enjoyed this glimpse into a completely different culture, and this scifi imagining.
I'm counting this as the final book in Authors A-Z Reading Challenge (for O). I'm also counting it for Nigeria/Africa in the 666 Around the World Reading Challenge.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I'm sending this to the winner of the Amazing Supernatural Sweepstakes. It's supposed to be scifi but I found that it felt more supernatural than scientific. In any case, it's accompanied by a book that's more traditionally supernatural, so it's an extra bonus.
Thank you so much, hobbit; an intriguing book indeed (I loved your description!), with a lovely card and bookmark.
Thanks for your generosity, two books instead of one... you have been brilliant!! :)

Not my cup of tea, sorry... so it continues its travels to the winner of the Maritime Sweeps. Congrats on winning... and enjoy!!
Thank you! This looks very intriguing. I look forward to reading it.
It's also great to receive such a well-travelled book. Will try to prolong its adventures some time in the future.

Odd... very odd indeed!
I loved the ideas of this book, and its setting in Lagos. It's so rare for me to read a book by an African author. I particularly liked the sections where sea creatures and other animals gave their perspective on what was happening when the aliens arrived, and how this benefitted them.
Okorafor's writing style was overall probably a little heavy-handed for my taste - characters' thoughts were precise and exactly stated throughout the book whereas I prefer a little more subtlety. I can't say I warmed to any character in particular (possibly with the exception of Anthony). Quite a few of the middle-ranking ones struggled to develop beyond stereotype.
So for ideas and concept this would have merited a higher rating, but the writing and characters brought it down a bit for me.

Passed to Cassandra2020 during a small garden meetup this afternoon.
Sounds interesting and has already been on quite a journey of its own. Thanks for this
