No, I hadn't read it before - a small-town-America story, with Lily at the centre, a 19-year-old waitress who aspires to become an actress. She notices a man at the window of the apartment block opposite hers, and rather daringly sets about seducing him. The other characters are all a bit strange - those that come into the café, the old lady neighbour Mabel who has her own secrets, some of the other amateur actors. Strange but compelling, with touches of intimacy that make it seem very real.
