Thank you for the unexpected gift! I think I've only read fantasy novels by Bujold, so I'll be curious to try her sci-fi.

Journal Entry 4 by emmejo at Cortland, New York USA on Thursday, April 15, 2021
Well, now I can say that I also enjoy Bujold's sci-fi! I galloped through this book, reading most of it in a single day. Smooth, swift pacing and engaging character interactions made it an excellent light read (with an occasional emotional wallop!)

It is a product of its time (mid '80's) and there are some tropes that have aged better than others. On the whole, I found it to have held up better than a lot of mass-market military sci-fi. I think the strength is how human Bujold's characters are, which allows them to feel convincing even when particular roles or tech trends butt up against your suspension of disbelief.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Added to the Feminism/Girl Power Bookbox. There aren't too many military sci-fi tales that are women-focused, so I figured it was worth including.
