WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Not my usual cup of tea, I'd say.
Fed up by all that's going on, I saw a Netflix ad for the show and watched it. I liked the small town charme and the quirky, if time and time again unbelievable, characters and I though the central love story was done well - mostly. While the show had some narrative weaknesses, I wanted to read the source material as I am supposed to read a romance for a challenge this year.

Said and done. I can understand some of the changes the story had to undergo before appearing on the small screen. The romance is sweet enough and the characters appear to have some depth. But it really isn't about character development or an exciting plot. It starts as a will-they, won't-they and quickly turns into a steamy affair and ultimately into a very white, very traditional, conservative relationship. Sexy young widow leaves behind old life, comes to small town in the woods, meets older bachelor, who is perfect in every way the author could think of - flirts, teases, holds back, falls in bed, falls in love, gets pregnant, quickly marries said bachelor, finds happiness.

The show did a better job at weaving in at least some side characters to give the whole thing a little more body. I enjoyed Doc Mullins or Preacher much more in the adaptation. In the book they do not really function as more than decoration for the front and centre couple. I do not regret reading this, but one is enough.

Though the prose is ... well ...ähm:

“Nah,” she said, shaking her head. “She keeps looking at my crotch,” he said. Giggles. “Not everything,” she said. “I kept the more delicious stuff to myself.”

"He gave her a little peck on the lips. “Your sister is great, Mel.” He gave her another. “Get rid of her,” he said. Then with a whack on the butt, he turned and left her."

"One look at her in those tight jeans and he was in agony. It took willpower to keep himself from responding physically."

"He was the most sexually driven man she’d ever known."

"Mark was not bad looking—and this was the only context under which Jack would allow himself to make such an assessment of another man."

Well, I guess you don't read books like these for the language or finesse... ;)
