My last book of 2020, for the Popsugar Reading Challenge Prompt: a cover with only words. A few covers came close (like The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue) but on closer look have graphics.

Jonathan Safran Foer is better known for his novels, Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. While his fictional characters are too off kilter to my liking, I love this personal and in depth look into some of the issues regarding our food consumption that we have ignored for too long.

Whether you plan on participating in Veganuary, starting Meatless Monday, simply eating healthier, or just want to know more about industrial farming, this book is worth the read, because we should all understand better where our food comes from and what impacts our food choice has.

One sentence that really stands out and that seems to encapsulate our past year on so many levels: "it's always possible to wake someone from sleep, but no amount of noise will wake someone who is pretending to be asleep."

The book is a personal journey, but at the same time unbiased. The author is not preaching for veganism, but he presents facts about our farm industry and opens up conversations. If you are interested in reading this book, you probably have heard or read about some of the farm animal abuse he describes. He gives voices to the animals as well as people - the workers, the farmers.

It makes me realize that as I choose to buy eggs from pasture raised hen, I am making lives better for thousands of hens, I also condemn millions of male baby chicks to death and the hen to slaughterhouse after a short life. Even if I may still eat meat, the awareness makes me more mindful of what I eat, where I buy my meat, especially my choices when eating out (fast food will most definitely getting their meat from the worst offenders) and be more grateful of every bite I partake.

It's a worthwhile read for every person. As the author's grandma's said, If nothing matters, there is nothing to save.
