I am utterly addicted to this series, so really, she can just keep writing them and I will just keep reading them. Me and Kate seem to be about the same age now - and really, wouldn't it be great to follow Kate Shugak all the way into her dotage when she becomes one of the new Aunties =).

The Shugak series follows relevant issues to Alaska, depicts ways of life and survival and also, setting aside the mysteries for one moment, is an ongoing story of all the characters who live in the park. You could read this one as a stand alone easy, but some of the intricacies and back stories on the characters will be lost to you. This particular book deals with some dark themes, and actually these aren't so much Alaska specific as global sadly: drug trafficking, money laundering, and the particularly dark and depressing sex trafficking.

This book starts off on New Year's Eve, in the park. It's extremely cold, as always in winter. There's a really, really bad storm blowing. And there's a small aircraft flying over - what... ? which then crashes into the mountains. And there are two survivors, two Latin children strapped in the back of the plane. And bags and bags of little white pills....

Was a little bemused at the assasination attempt at Auntie Vi's (now, is this a plot spoiler? Given that people are ALWAYS trying to kill Kate, it doesn't feel like one), where two supposedly highly capable professional killers rock up to finish it and seem to manage such a ham fisted attempt, knocking at the front door and coming in together. Ha, not that I'm a professional hit woman. Anyway, thank goodness they were a bit rubbish. We might have some more books coming =)
