A novel of Maori myths, power and original inspiration. Author Fay Anith Cossar immerses herself in the teachings of New Zealand s tribal people, in stories of the universal battle of opposites, making the wisdom of a complex culture accessible to her readers. Infused from bones and earth, from the glorious landscape of New Zealand, its numinous mountains, rainforest and seashore, East of Ra sweeps us out of a dynamic cultural past into an uncertain future. Firstly, Rahera, an irresolute wild woman, retreats back in time to a Maori warrior society in Aoteoroa New Zealand. Energized by her contact with the land and the people of the land, the tangata and the whenua, her metamorphosis begins. Ra grows stronger. Her spiritual charisma emerges. She plummets into the horrors of a war of utu. She becomes the wife of the rangatira Kahu Wanawana. They are jostled mercilessly by their fateful connection. Theirs is a karmic journey that affects everything, to the depths of the cells; to the level of the stars. Necessity shapes her into a leader who governs the future of the tribe. On her return to modern times, Rahera creates the Ratena movement. Its purpose is to balance the rise of the Abelius faction. Again the resurgence of the Kahu entity as Cronin Jahad, leader of the Abelians. Even though Cronin and Rahera support opposing ideologies, the inexorable twining of destiny binds them. The Kaha (power) builds to impossible levels. What will be the outcome of the merging of these beings on many levels since ancient times? Can the pattern of causation be broken? And can the end times be averted?
