A Pair of Silk Stockings and Other Stories
2 journalers for this copy...
A birthday gift from a friend during pandemic that I enjoyed reading and am happy to share with someone.
This book contains use of the N word and depictions of slavery but is quite pithy in its challenge of the patriarchy and racial prejudice. Desiree's Baby is probably the author's most famous short story and rightfully so. It will stay with me for a long time with its gut-wrenching but elegantly simple indictment of racism and the taboos against miscegenation. The title story was also excellent in providing a glimpse into the mindset of a poor woman who suddenly gets a little extra money. I don't think there was a story in here that didn't leave an impression.

What a lovely hitchhiker that journeyed here with Vacationland Kate Chopin is an amazing author. I look forward to reading this, even though it's been a long time since I've worn silk stockings. Thank you so much. Will read and release.
An interesting book to read, and that first story, oh wow. I first read Kate Chopin in the early 70’s when I was struggling to understand all the issues with women’s rights and equality. Now, in the light of my struggles to understand issues of racism, especially trying to find a way forward from racialized trauma, and breaking out of white safety to understand what impacts my black sisters and brothers, and extend an honest, understanding, and helpful hand forward, I find this narrative of a previous slice of life extremely timely.
