I got this softcover at a local Savers thrift shop. It's a collection of Christie's supernatural tales, including some with actual supernatural elements and others involving presumptions of hauntings or curses that turn out to be something more mundane. Some of the tales are downright scary, and some are really hilarious (including the delightful "The Blue Jar") - I'd forgotten how suspenseful and/or whimsical Christie can be when she wants.

The title story is among the most harrowing here, with its account of a medium whose sittings are really taking it out of her - in a way that becomes all too literal when the client is a bereaved mother desperate to reclaim her child.

Then there's "The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb", a Poirot story in which what seems to be a curse upon those who've opened a tomb turns out to be a more diabolical modern-day plot.

"The Idol House of Astarte" is a Miss Marple story centered on a sudden death in a grove said to have been the site of ancient rites; here, again, the truth reveals the darkness in modern-day men rather than any lingering curses.

"Philomel Cottage" features a woman who begins to suspect that her happy marriage is anything but; indeed, she fears her husband is planning to kill her. Neat twist at the end of this one.

"Wireless" involves a young man's plot to get his inheritance early - at the cost of his aunt's life. It's a clever scheme, but things don't quite go as he planned.

Then there's a man whose spirit's been exchanged with that of a cat, a lonely little child ghost seeking a guide home, a cultist using drugs and a forceful personality to bilk women out of their savings, and more.
